Finding Antique Radios That Are In Prime Working Condition

By Muna wa Wanjiru

People have loved listening to music, stories and the current events that occur around them from tales told by traveling bands of people, bards, anyone who is knowledgeable about those matters. As civilizations became more advanced the methods of communication changed. The predecessor to our modern radios - antique radios - allowed our parents and grandparents the ability to hear news from distant places, stories and even music.

These antique radios are all but unseen today. You can however still find a few of these antique radios in various places like garage sales, second hand dealers, antique shops, museums and old radio parts shops.

While most of these radios will not be in pristine condition, you may find a few that are in prime working condition. These might need a bit of a tune-up or replacement parts added here and there but for the most part you will find they can still deliver the goods.

As these antique radios are somewhat hard to find in mint condition you should expect to pay a fairly high price for one that is in total working mint condition. The different varieties of these old radios ensured that people in those times had a choice of radio styles to fit their budget and their home environment.

While you will see that almost all of our radios are on the compact and portable side the antique radios of yesteryear are large sized models that you could only move with the aid of movers. Even though these antique radios are quite bulky to move they are still desired pieces of history.

Now when you are looking to buy antique radios there are various items that should be looked at before you make a purchase. The first item that is important is that of the price. Even if you like how an old radio looks if you cant afford it there is no point in looking at this radio any longer. You should also check to see if the antique radio is still in perfect to fine working order.

You may not feel that this is necessary but without testing the radio out you may have a very badly damaged radio on your hands. Once you have tested and looked at all of the factors which may prevent you from buying your old antique radio you need to have it delivered to your home. If the radio is not that big then you can see about taking it home yourself. Buying antique radios will provide you with living piece of history that you can pass down the generations.

Essentially these two glass-making techniques remained the same until the invention of the press-molding machine in the 1820s. With the development of this technology, the molten substances used to make glass could be pressed into a mold instead of being hand blown. The new technology enabled the production of a variety of glass tablewares such as pitchers, decanters, glasses, plates, and bowls. Eventually pressed glass replaced hand blown glass, although hand blown glass is still being made today by contemporary artisans.

Don't assume that because a dealer knows more than you, that you can't get a good deal. You still may have some way of realizing the value of a piece that they can't take advantage of. Perhaps you know someone who'd pay quite a bit for the last whatever in their collection. The piece may not be worth that much to any other collector, but since it fills out that person's collection, they'd give someone alot for it. Also, if you have special skills for refurbishing antiques (or have a friend who does) you may be able to bring a piece to it's top-dollar condition. This is something many dealers don't have the time or resources to do.

What Makes Antiques Valuable?

By Kent Sayre

We all know what antiques are. We see them epitomized in things as large as cars, tables, chairs and dressers, to things as small as ornaments, dolls, silverware and jewelry. One of the most popular places where people from all over the country display and have their antiques appraised is at the Antiques Roadshow. The Antiques Roadshow is just as the name describes--appraisers take their antiquing knowledge with them all over the country and locals have their items appraised(Arizona, Utah, Alabama, Wisconsin, Hawaii and Pennsylvania are the Roadshow's destinations this summer). These shows are then aired on PBS (the U.S. version has been around for over 10 years now!), where people watching from home share in owners' joy after being informed their oak table is worth tens of thousands of dollars. Viewers also share in owners' disappointments, wherein a piece believed to be of great worth is, in fact, worth less than what he or she bought it for.

Yet while know antiques are old, what makes an antique, an antique? Well, that depends on what item youre talking about.

If the item is a car, 25 years or more is considered to be an antique in the United States. For other things--like a table or vase--75 to 100 years worth of life is considered antique. Other characteristics of an antique include its rarity, its overall condition and how collectable it is, or was, considered to be.

For those who enjoy antiquing (i.e. going to various antique outlets to buy items that either adds to their collection or they sell to collectors) these are important things to consider. People who have unwittingly bought faux antiques can certainly attest to this. But by knowing what to look for and learning some of the tools of the trade that appraisers use when determining an antiques value, antiquing can be a fun and profitable hobby, sometimes yielding thousands of dollars. For example, when the Antiques Roadshow traveled to Arizona in 2003, a residents Navajo blanket was appraised at between $350,000 and $500,000. It remains one of the most valuable items featured on the show since its debut.

Antiques - An Introduction

By Michael Russell

If you look up the word antique in the dictionary you will find the following definition:

'antique (noun), pronounced an.tique. 1 : a relic or object of ancient times; 2 a : a work of art, piece of furniture, or decorative object made at an earlier period and according to various customs laws at least 100 years ago;'

Okay, so now we technically know what an antique is.

But are all antiques worth anything?

Thats where the answer is a little harder to come up with than a mere definition.

Just what DOES make an antique worth something?

The simple answer to that is us.

As with anything else in life and in the market place how much something is worth depends on how much a person is willing to pay for it. Taking an extreme example, if you go back 100 years from the writing of this article, it would be safe to say that a person would be more willing to pay a large sum of money for John William Godwards 'Flabellifera' painting of 1905 than for a wooden fence taken from the front of someones house in that same year. Theyre both 100 years old, and technically both antiques, but since wooden fences are probably a dime a dozen, even from that year, it is doubtful that the wooden fence would demand much of a price. Not to say there arent some people who would pay something for a 100 year old fence.

So what are some of the more in demand antiques of the day and how much are people willing to pay for them?

Well, how about wrapping your brain around some of these prices.

A pair of Victorian birds eye maple music chests from 1875 carry a price tag of about $21,000.

A Regency rosewood sofa table with brass inlay goes for about $14,000.

A fine quality Queen Anne period walnut bureau circa 1705 goes for around $14,500.

A 1795 George III oak longcase clock with eight day striking movement by Stanford, Yarmouth sells for in the vicinity of $6,100.

Getting away from furniture and moving to the art world, a Victorian style old English oil painting from around 1870 goes for about $500.

A James Stark Victorian English landscape painting from 1842 goes for a whopping $5,995, and that doesnt include shipping charges.

Interested in a good antique watch? An 8 Days Railroad Pocket Watch from 1890 goes for about $300.

An 1897 Imperial Russian Military Pocket Watch has a price tag of about $500.

An Imperial Russian Family Pavel Watch Circa 1897 will get about $600 from an interested buyer.

A New Columbus 16 jewel pocket watch made in 1880 sells for about $300.

A turn of the 20th century Hamilton 17 jewel pocket watch will end up in someones hands for about $350.

And we havent even scratched the surface of antiques. What is listed above is relatively cheap. The expensive stuff goes back hundreds of years and goes for amounts that would stagger the imagination. Well go over some of the more expensive antiques including items from the 17th and 18th century in a future article.

GET IT IN WRITING: any claims made about the item you are buying related to its age, origin, condition, or anything else that affects it value should be on the receipt. So should the dealer's name, address and telephone number. The receipt may help you get your money back later if required.

Check the Finish. The exterior of the piece should be a uniform color, except for variations that would naturally occur through exposure to the elements and use. Surface blemishes and scars are acceptable, but burn marks cant be taken out or painted over without cutting out that section of wood, so avoid buying antiques with a burn unless you can live with it. A piece of furniture costing more than $300 shouldnt have any visible nails; their presence may be signs of a sloppy repair job.
