Why You Should Consider An Antique Appraisal For Your Collection

By Angel Estrella

Antiques are widely collected and, as such, are very valuable. Everything from glassware to paintings and even furniture, antiquities are the hobby of choice for many collectors. If you collect antiques of any kind, you will want them to be protected just as you would any other item in your household. This is one of the reasons why you may need an antique appraisal.

When it comes to protecting your investment against theft, fire or other misfortune, you may need your antique appraisal to secure insurance for your prized antiques. Because collections are not always covered under a general home insurance policy, many individuals are unaware that they may need to purchase a separate rider policy if they are to protect their investment.

A rider policy is simply a separate policy, which is added to your home insurance and protects the items covered in the event of a disaster. When insuring anything, including antiques, the insurance company will want to know the value of the items being covered. To that end, it is often necessary to get a professional antique appraisal of every item that you want included under the rider policy. This antique appraisal can be presented to the insurance agent, who will make a copy and return the original appraisal to you for your records.

An antique appraisal, much like any other, will contain an image of the item(s) being valued, a description and a value for either each separate piece or the entire group as a whole. When seeking an antique appraisal, it is best to select a professional who has a lot of experience in the field of antiquities. Not just any experience, however, but experience in the field directly related to your items. For instance, you would not want a furniture expert to give you an antique appraisal on your glassware. Instead, you would put more reliance on an antique appraisal for glassware from an expert in that field.

An antique appraisal can be expensive, which is why its important to shop around and compare prices from several different professionals. It is important to video your entire collection, as well as take your own photographs and write down descriptions of each item prior to handing your items over to an appraiser. If the unthinkable should ever happen and your collection becomes lost, damaged or stolen, you will be glad that you had an antique appraisal and applied the items to your homeowners insurance policy as a separate rider policy. In some instances, antiques and other collectibles may be covered under a general policy and may not actually require a rider policy, but this is best discussed with each individual insurance agency.

As a general rule of thumb the beginning collector can take the year 1830 as a demarcation line. After 1830 many goods such as furniture and decorative items began to be mass produced. This is not to say that these items cannot be valuable or collectible but the criteria for judging their value will be different than that of earlier pieces.

Please Define What Antiques Are

By Allison Thompson

An antique is any object which has reached an age which makes them a witness to a previous era in the world.

An antique is an object which usually shows a degree of craftsmanship or has a certain attention to design such as a desk or an early car. In this consumer driven society of today an antique is above all an object whose typical construction and age provide it with a value in todays market that is higher than similar objects made more recently. You will find that a large number of museums will make considerable use of antiques in order to illustrate historical events and provide those events with a practical context.

Any object can become an antique in the future as long as it survives, but the snob factor and the article actually being socially accepted can only help to ensure that it is actually worth some value in the market place in the future.

Unfortunately you may find that the term antique will occasionally be used as an insult, if say some one wants to depreciate the usefulness of an item or a procedure that is being carried out. In fact those people who have decided to reject the trappings of the consumer society we live in today have rejected the markets which help to inflate the value (monetary wise) of antique objects despite their usefulness or aesthetic qualities.

Many antiques can be brought at either an antique shop or be passed down from generation to generation. Even you are really keen on antiques then the more valuable items can be brought through either an antique dealer, at auction or purchased online at either a website or online auction.

The definition that is presented in relation to what an antique is varies from source to source, product to product and year to year but some of the more tried and tested definitions which deserve consideration are as follows:-

An antique is an item which is at least 75 years old and is being collected due to the rarity of the item, its condition, its usefulness or something other feature that is unique to it. In some cases you will find cars that are more than 25 years are considered antiques in the USA and even some electronic pieces of equipment of more recent vintage will be considered as an antique.

An antique is any piece of furniture or a decorative object which has been produced in a former period of time and has become valuable because of its beauty or rarity.

By using these definitions you are allowing distinction between what is considered a genuine antique piece, a vintage item or just a collectable object.

However, sometimes the term antique is solely restricted to the remains of ancient art such as sculptures, gems, medals, seals etc., and in the most limited sense of the meaning it only applies to Greek or Roman art and will not include any artistic remains of other ancient cultures and societies or any other classical piece of art produced at a date later than the fall of the Western empire.

Don't assume that because a dealer knows more than you, that you can't get a good deal. You still may have some way of realizing the value of a piece that they can't take advantage of. Perhaps you know someone who'd pay quite a bit for the last whatever in their collection. The piece may not be worth that much to any other collector, but since it fills out that person's collection, they'd give someone alot for it. Also, if you have special skills for refurbishing antiques (or have a friend who does) you may be able to bring a piece to it's top-dollar condition. This is something many dealers don't have the time or resources to do.

I prefer single-owner shops to antique malls, although the former are getting harder and harder to find. Single-owner shops offer more personal service, and the proprietor can usually tell you the background on a piece or where it was found. Its easier to negotiate the price, too. Plus space is limited in many mall stalls, so youre less likely to find a large selection of furniture in them.

IS IT WISE TO REPAIR IT? Sometimes, what looks like damage actually makes an antique valuable. As with vintage cars, the original paint or finish on an antique desk might be prized, no matter what its condition.

Collectors are able to determine the age of bottles by looking at several features. Early bottles were either hand blown or blown into a mold. Bottles that were made between the late 17th century and the mid 19th century have a pontil mark. The pontil mark is a circular depression on the bottom of the bottle. It is made when the pontil rod is transferred from the blowpipe for final shaping and finishing. After 1800, the pontil was usually ground down and polished so it was not as noticeable, but it was still visible.
